When CB Terrence Wheatley walked off the Gillette Stadium field last Thursday with a couple of trainers, it crossed my mind it would be for the last time as a Patriot for Wheatley. But his chance of sticking around went up with CB Leigh Bodden going down.

Genreally, horse racing fans make good NFL fans. Not only because NFL fantasy involves Math, which is the horse racing fan's forte, but also because both involve conditioning.
A look at 2010 NFL, and what looks to happen. I'll give some predictions, but fans know that close games, injuries, blown coverages, and psycological brekdowns occur any time.

Top of the morning to you sports fans!
The sun has yet to rise in the east, but your favorite sports junkie is up early getting in his fix. I have no idea why I am up at 5:00 in the morning on a Saturday, but I felt it was appropriate to share my insomnia with whoever else might be up at the crack of dawn.

With the Hall of Fame game being played this past weekend, the 2010-2011 NFL season is on the horizon. With teams in training camp and rosters being formed, I'll take you around the league in the coming weeks to preview each division. This week we start with the AFC South, a division dominated by the Indianapolis Colts. Will their run continue this year or will someone else take the division title? We'll go in order from worst to first from last year's season standings. Let's get it on!

Friends and Countrymen,
I know that you have missed me so much over the last month or so and I want to apologize for my extended absence. I have several ready made excuses for why I haven’t been actively blogging and I am sure that you will accept all of them at face value. For one thing, there hasn’t been anything going on in the world of sports. I mean other than the NBA playoffs, the NHL playoffs, the start of the MLB season, the return of Tiger Woods, the transgressions and subsequent suspension of Ben Roethlisberger (I did it! I spelled the damn thing), etc.

It is believed that ole Rex was signed to replace the aging Todd Collins as the #2 behind JC. Although.....He did play for Kyle Shanahan (New Redskins Offensive Coordinator) and Matt Lafleur (New Redskins Quarterbacks Coach) in Houston last year. I believed that he was only signed to help instill the offense Kyle runs, or maybe to mentor some young rookie QB. The latest that I heard however, was that he is going to be challenging Campbell for the starter position. Let me display my feelings on this notion.

With less than five hours before free agency begins, let me get a few thoughts out of my mind:
Be sure to sign the Leigh Bodden thank-you card. He’s not coming back. He’s the second-best corner back available in free agency after Houston’s Dunta Robinson. It shouldn’t take him long to find an offer that he can’t pass up. His gamble to sign a one year deal with a promise from the Patriots that they wouldn’t franchise him will pay off. He erased his years with Detroit, including the 0-16 season, from everyone’s mind. Wish you luck at your next career stop, Leigh, as long as it’s not with an AFC East team.

It’s the kind of injury that believers in playing it safe use as an example. WR Wes Welker injured his knee when he planted his left foot to change direction, but the knee gave away. People believe he tore his ACL and MCL, ending Welker’s season just before the playoffs.

Though it means nothing, I am required by football law to point out I was 7-0 in my Opening Drive predictions for week 17. Woot. Happy New Year everyone! The NFC is all about seeding this Sunday, with all of the players at the table. In the AFC, the two wildcard spots will be hotly contested with the Ravens and Jets owning the inside track. I recently read that the Cowboys were last in the league in terms of forcing turnovers. Despite playing solid defense(16.5 ppg), they have only forced 23 turnovers this season. I haven’t seen the defensive backs dropping a lot of passes, so that is not the answer. I also haven’t seen this team miss out on a lot of fumble recovery opportunities so that can’t be the cause either. There must be a reason why the Cowboys can’t seem to get the ball back from the other team. Although it is easy to say that they just haven’t been lucky or gotten the right bounces, there is a definitely a method to causing turnovers and it all starts up front. The Cowboys front seven needs to be coached up on the value of turnovers and wreaking havoc in the backfield. Although they do a good job of getting to the passer, they do not get their hands on enough passes and they have not

After the Patriots’ loss to the Indianapolis Colts, the first thing I did when I started my car was turn off the radio. I almost didn’t turn on my t.v. Just like the Patriots addressed the secondary with defending tall receivers in mind, the Miami Dolphins did the same in the off-season. The difference was the source of the remedy.
New England signed free agent veteran cornerbacks Shawn Springs and Leigh Bodden. Miami went the younger route and drafted Vonta Davis and Sean Smith.

Pro Bowl balloting is open to the public. Choose wisely.
This year New England fans will have a tough time rationalizing Patriot players worthy of being selected. The offense’s big three of QB Tom Brady and WRs Randy Moss and Wes Welker will get their share of votes. Beyond them…good luck.

It's been an up and down season so far, but I want to take this bye week as an opportunity to take a look forward to next week.
Week 7: @ Houston Texans. This should be an interesting game. The Texans run defense has been suspect all season, and as you may well be aware, Mike Singletary is an "Old-School"-run-the-ball-play-tough-defense kind of coach. The 49ers will hopefully be welcoming back Frank Gore (he has been looking good in practice all week) who will be chomping at the bit to get the ball. Look for the 49ers to pound the ball early to get Gore going, and then use him to stretch the defense with screens and dump-offs, eventually leading to some playaction passes. The Texans have the weapons to put up some points, so it will up to Nate Clements to lock down Andre Johnson, and Patrick Willis to supply decent pressure.

We'll get back to horse racing soon. This is a lull in the season. Now, even the horse players are focused on the NFL. Who will be better? Who will be worse.
In this analysis, I simply take what the teams had, what they lost and gained, and weigh all the potentials. For example, 3 first and second round draft pick linebackers in their third year would translate into at least 2 successes.

A team strength just got a tiny bit weaker. The Patriots traded DL Le Kevin Smith to Denver for a 5th round pick. That selection was then sent to Oakland to complete the Derrick Burgess trade. The agreement was New England gave the Raiders 3rd and 4th round selections unless the Pats could get Oakland a 5th round pick. If the Pats came through with the fifth rounder, then that would replace the fourth round pick.

With the Colts not re-signing Freddie Keihao and Tyjaun Hagler, should they start bringing in new ones in the draft?
Absolutely not!
Why bring James Laurenitis, like the NFL Network suggested in their mock draft, when they can bring back this important linebacker: Cato June?

By now we've all heard the story and probably seen the video. Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats was driving his family to the Baylor Regional Medical Center in the Dallas Suburb of Plano, to make it to see his mother-in-law as she was in critical condition. She was suffering from breast cancer, and they had been told she didn't have much time. Moats put on his hazards, and by his account rolled through a red light after making sure the way was clear. Officer Robert Powell was parked nearby and attempted to pull him over. Moats continued to drive a short distance to the hospital, as Powell pursued. As he pulled up near the entrance of the hospital, the family jumped out of the car. Officer Powell instructed them to get back in the car, but Moats wife Tamishia and another family member ran inside. Ryan Moats tried explaining the situation to Officer Powell, who over the course of the next thirteen minutes would not listen, and herein lies the controversy.

As football fans across the globe cast their longing eyes in the direction of the April draft, I decided that now might be a good time to reflect on draft classes of the last 10 years. Too often in this business, we rush ahead to the next big event without taking pause to evaluate the past and learn from it. In a way, this study will still be a celebration of the coming 2009 draft as I believe it will shed some light on certain overlooked trends that no one ever stops to consider. I will begin with a class by class showdown of sorts at the quarterback position over the last 10 drafts. This is part III in the series:

This Purple Crew fan/blogger just read on ESPN.com that reports say the Vikes are in the process of completing a trade for Sage Rosenfels of the Texans? If this isn't true, please disregard and I will thank my lucky stars. If this is true and does happen, I will lose faith in Spielman, Childress, and company until there is a regime change. Rosenfel? What happened to (1) #5 (McNabb) that sent a clear signal with his delaying signing an extension until he knows their plan for winning, short term! he hasn't bought what the Eagles are selling. (2) Cassel in NE is not a signed sealed deal with him being a back up. Also, (3) paramount there is Garcia which is an awesome two year plan, until a long term plan is achieved. BUT no! Rosenfels.....?? Please tell me it isn't so Purple Crew brass! I am sorry, but if this becomes reality, a lot of loyal and patient fans are going to bail on the 2009 season. Sage would have to play out of his gord to get fans to buy into it. I think back to the game last season where he pretty much gave a game away to the opposition single handed. Please Purple Brass, tell me it ain't so!!

To no surprise, the Patriots attached the franchise tag to QB Matt Cassel. And in even less of a no-brainer, Cassel accepted the one-year tender of $14.6 million.

Now that I’ve had some time to cool off, I can now address the Chicago Bears’ heart-breaking loss to the Houston Texans last Sunday. Chicago entered Sunday’s must-win contest with two possible scenarios to make it into the playoffs. If they won and Minnesota lost to the Giants, the Bears would claim the division title and host a wild-card game. If the Vikings won, the Bears could still make it in as a wild-card with losses from Dallas and Tampa Bay. Minnesota ended up beating New York with a last-second field goal, Tampa Bay ended up losing a fist-fight with the Raiders of all teams, and Dallas fell into despair thanks to the Eagles in the afternoon game. Of course, all of these possibilities required a Bears win in Houston that never happened. Lovie Smith’s crew never showed the desperation and intensity you would expect of a team fighting to make it into the post-season.

Let’s assess the situation at linebacker. The starter is hurt. His back-up was knocked out of Sunday’s game making a tackle and didn’t return to the field. His back-up, a third round rookie, is already on injured reserve. As insurance, the Patriots bring back an oft-injured player they cut in the off-season because his declining productivity wasn’t worth the salary.

No one is saying it. The networks and big newspapers love to ignore the WAC, Mountain West, and others as if they were a conservative Republican with no charisma. In my area, for example, the Utah-BYU game was not even on television. A game between two top 20 teams was unavailable. A game that would determine one of the schools in the BCS this season was a no-show.

While I don’t want to take anything away from the Vikings, Houston lost the game more than Minnesota won it. Our Texans lost the turnover battle 3-1 in the game giving up 2 interceptions in the opponent’s redzone and fumbling while in Viking territory. Jacques Reeves recorded Houston’s lone turnover in the game picking off a Gus Frerotte pass and returning it for the score. While Reeves made arguable the biggest play in the game for the Texans, he was rarely able to hold his own against the Minnesota receiving corps giving up 2 of Frerotte’s 3 TD passes and was beat numerous other times.

The Houston Texans win in obvious fashion in their week 8 contest against the Cincinnati Bengals puts them right where they were last year when they had their first non losing season in team history.

The Houston Texans have opened up a can of both confidence and whoop-sum-booty over the past weeks. Their plays have been consistent and the team appears to finally be on the same page as they continue to learn how to win games. With the exception of “showboating” displayed a little today by Dunta Robinson. (He demonstrated his dance moves after an interception, his first since returning from an injury last season; it was overturned and given back to the Bengals though.) The plays were almost flawless other than that. Slow and steady will win the race for our boys this season if they can maintain their consistency as they make more and more plays on the field.

All signs seemed to be pointing to Rosey ending up in Indy since he played college ball at Purdue and the penchant of former Pats to sign with a direct rival. But Colvin will continue to terrorize Peyton Manning, now twice per season, in the AFC South and I couldn't be happier that the Pats won't have to deal with his playmaking.

*Editor's Note: This piece was written Tuesday night but, due to Internet problems, is being posted just now.
Only the NFL can make headlines with the release of its regular season schedule. Granted, there are only a handful of games for fans to absorb, so the attention given to each week is natural. However, this speaks increasingly to the booming popularity of the league.

Of particular note, at least for myself, is the Miami Dolphin schedule.

There's a lot of talk going on, starting with the Miami Dolphins talking contract with Jake Long and Vernon Gholston. And the talk that died down between Dallas and Tennessee has sparked back up.

As many of you might be aware I find NFL mock drafts to be somewhat of a waste of time (scroll down for earlier post) but I can't claim to even be a respectable football blogger without posting a mock of my own. So, without further ado, here's how I see the NFL Draft going down in t-minus 25 days...

What better day to release a mock draft than on April Fools Day? No one takes these seriously anyway. Even funnier, people do this as if it has any reliability. Yet every year fans and experts can't resist to make an attempt at predicting who goes where in the first round. It's crazy, really.

Despite many Spygate-enthusiasts belief that Dom Capers was added to the Patriots staff strictly as insurance should the NFL suspend Bill Belichick when the Assistant Golf Pro finally comes clean, the addition of the veteran defensive coach is one that should greatly help the team in the area where they needed it most at the end of the 2007 almost-dream season.

First, I never wanted to add myself to the clutter of talking heads spouting off with their opinion. However, if someone is willing to pay me this minimal fee to do this, then I guess being at a young age without much money I am going to sellout. Not to mention when your life has become something even you yourself have to laugh at, and you don’t have much going on during a week night, blogging doesn’t seem too bad.

Sweet fancy moses! It appears as if the Giants are bringing in David C-A-R R you going to the mall today for a workout. Oh great, he's a huge upgrade over the hefty lefty and anthony 'the most popular guy in the league' wright. Carr is the biggest bust since Tim Couch, and only because Couch was injured. Carr is afraid of his own shadow, just what we need here in New York. This is what the Star-Ledger says:

On Sunday, the Browns beat the Houston Texans to the score of 27-17. Afterwards, on such Cleveland sports programs like “Browns Redzone,” fans called in to voice their anxiety about the quarterback situation.
