Hope in Mo-Ville

It happened. It really happened. The Detroit Lions did something smart. The trade of Roy Williams has got to bring some hope to the historically horrific franchise-not because Roy can't play, but because the Lions have just turned one first round pick(Roy Williams) into several picks. Let's face it. The Lions need picks, but what they really need is players.

With the firing of Matt Millen, maybe these picks will turn into players. There are only three ways to turn a franchise around quickly-lots of good picks, great pick ups in free agency, and the hiring of a great coach.

If Detroit makes a smart move now with their General Manager position, these all could come true. The new Gm will have lots of picks, room under the salary cap, and the power to change coaches. Bill Cowher will be available. Don't forget, the Lions also play in a weak division.

   The details of the trade:

Detroit gets a first rounder, a third rounder, and a sixth rounder for Roy Williams and a seventh round pick.

Historically, this isn't quite the Herschell Walker trade, but close. Many years ago the Dallas Cowboys fleeced the Minnesota Vikings in that trade and went on to win 3 Super Bowls. That act of thievery was equivalent you stealing Eva Longoria from Tony Parker.

At any rate, this trade brings hope. Without a Super Bowl ring, hope is the most coveted prize in the NFL. The Lions now have it. What they do with it  could turn hope into rings or at least respectability, which is something this franchise has been sadly lacking.

The best thing about this trade, the salary cap room and a coach that's been there long enough to prove that he isn't THE MAN-a quality General Manager might actually WANT this job. That could not have been said a month ago. Now there is a window of oportunity.  Before, that window was slammed shut, locked, and boarded up like my windows during Hurricane Ike. Now, the Lions windows are open like mine-feeling the cool breeze of Fall-ahhhhhh, fresh air. The Lions now can experience their own breath of fresh air.

     P. S. - I am moving to Michigan in a few months and I am excited that the Lions could be my new team.
