What better way to start my life as a sports blogger than this. It is my opening post, yet more importantly to the sports fan it is Pro Football Eve!!! That's right.  Football is back and the 5 month holiday is "The Most wonderful Time of the Year", but only some of us will get presents. Santa Coughlin may be in the giving mood again. It is more likely however,  that Giselle will lead the Patriot fans in a Marilyn Monroe inspired "Santa Bra-dy", asking for that "one thing, a ring".

Well, in honor of this wonderful season I have written a carol. So, fire up the grill and stock the cooler. I hope that you like it.

To paraphrase Dennis Green, They might or might not be who they thought they were!

In a very strange game, the New york Giants defeated the Washington Redskins with a hypocrital effort as they continued to show the inconsistency that has plagued them for years. For those who see the glass half full, remember that it was the last third of last season in which they could do no wrong-dominating defensively and operating the offense with care and efficiency. During the playoffs the enigma that is Eli Manning, who threw interceptions more often that a Tour de France cyclist takes enhancers, caught fire during that late stretch and lead the Giants to a historic ending. Well, here we go again.

In the season opener, the Giants showed why they had become the new Patriots. Scoring at will and dominating on defense, they may have caused the rest of the NFL to wonder if they will ever lose. In fact, they might even win a home game. But, success breeds complacency and so it goes for the Giants. After the first 20 minutes, the Giants fell back to Earth.

Tony Romo is out for the season.  The hopes and dreams of the Dallas Cowboys rest in the arm and mind of Brad Johnson. Sorry Cowboy fans, this is not the Buccaneers revisited.

This is a ‘Nightmare before Christmas’ that even Tim Burton would not want to be a part of. For team Dallas, this would be a scenario of catastrophic proportions, and for their fans it would be another year of frustration.

Breathe easy Cowboy nation.  Tony isn't injured. Romo seems to be very durable and obviously he has the agility to, more often than not, keep himself out of harms way. But you, as all fans should, need to always keep in mind that talent is the train to NFL immortality. Injuries are the fastest way to derail that train. The offensive line has a huge responsibilty in Dallas. For the Cowboys, and for the NFL, let’s hope that they are up to the challenge.

I generally write a column, and well, their columns-opinions insight, etc. But this Merriman news explains a lot. According to NBC sports, it was just reported a few minutes ago that, when the Chargers had their physicals for each player at the end of last season, Shawn Merriman was told THEN by the teams medical staff that he needed surgery on the knee. He instead, as we know now, chose to rehab it. What  is your view? Does that change your opinion of A. J. Smith?Merriman?

A conversation will now be opening through the comment section below. Feel free to be a part.

Willie Parker. Willie-Bleepin’-Parker. The first Sunday of NFL and there I was. Like many of us, I had my snacks, beverages, I had my computer set to the side,  and I was logged in to ESPN Fantasy cast so that I could keep up with my team while the Texans were playing.  Houston Texans vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers on opening Sunday. Matt Schaub. Andre Johnson. This was going to be good.

The feelings of excitement that I felt at 11:59am this morning quickly vanished. I don’t know about you, but within an hour, a string of events ruined this Sunday. Most of this was due to the Texans performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers. But other factors were also at play.

Almost simultaneously, the game began and so did my wife. She was in rare form. You may have a girlfriend that is similar. You know, the kind with a heart of gold but know as much about sports as most of us know about Spanish after two years of high school foreign language-just enough curse words to get us in trouble. So, as she is want to do during those down times when NOTHING is going on-you know the ones like the Super Bowl, the NCAA basketball Final Four, the Masters golf tournament-she decides that it is time to bond. Lets talk about our week. Let’s talk about the vacation that we are planning in the year 2020. Let’s talk about the new inventions in kitchen utensils that can make our life easier. No, I am not kidding. But Joy is one in a million, so she took it one step further.

Believe. Believe. It’s the one word in sports that says so much but says so little. You’ve seen signs in every NFL stadium at some point with this simple word. ”Believe.” When MLB baseball approaches the postseason every year, the word reappears. “Believe.” But believe in what I ask you? Do the Chicago Cubs “believe” that they will win a World Championship? Or do they “believe” that some strange twist of fate will ruin another promising season. What does your team “believe” in?

After week 1 of the NFL season there is a definite divide in the NFL. At no other time in every season is there such a black and white line. As the season moves on, the line becomes blurry and grey. Until finally after week sixteen, the playoff line is drawn in the sand. Then drawn again after the Super Bowl, the penultimate line is drawn-“Champion.”

Here is the great Jack Buck's poem that was given on September 17, 2001.

"Since this nation was founded ... under God
More than 200 years ago
We have been the bastion of freedom
The light that keeps the free world aglow
We do not covet the possessions of others
We are blessed with the bounty we share.

We have rushed to help other nations
... anything ... anytime ... anywhere.

War is just not our nature
We won't start ... but we will end the fight
If we are involved we shall be resolved
To protect what we know is right.

We have been challenged by a cowardly foe
Who strikes and then hides from our view.

With one voice we say, "There is no choice today,
There is only one thing to do.

I just wanted to let you know that I may be unable to post for a few days. I live south of Houston, near Galveston, Texas. As hurricane Ike approaches there may be power outages and loss of internet access. If that is the case, I will be unable to write my column. Remember though, there are things much more important than sports. If you need Ike information, you can go to:

www.weather.com

Otherwise, if you are in the path of this storm, you should stay updated though the local media. My prayers are with us all. Good luck and see you soon!

First on a personal note:
I would like to thank all of you for your kind words and concern during the last ten days. Hurricane Ike has certainly had a devastating impact on the region (and the country for that matter), but it is so encouraging to see how much compassion can be found here in America. From me and my family -Thank you.

Houston vs. Tennessee
Fourth down. What in the world has happened to fourth down? The Houston Texans’ performance, and more to the point-choices, yesterday during fourth downs versus the Tennessee Titans was more frustrating than satellite television during a thunderstorm.

After digging a huge hole early in their game against the ‘Fighting Fishers’, Houston (although never really firing on all cylinders) found itself over and over again in scoring position. Inexplicably though, Coach Gary Kubiak chose not to take the points.

The economic “crisis" is not that complicated. The stock market always wants positive press to continue its trading, if not, speculators sell. Wow, what a surprise. Meanwhile the businesses that gave bad mortgages, and they don’t want to take the loss. A $10,000 loss on a house by a lender adds up over thousands of loans. But they can’t afford to wait for the capital to come back. They could liquidate much of these by selling at a cheaper price (free market go figure!), but they refuse to do this because the profit possibilities are amazing. I say sell them at a reduced price, get some capital, and quit whining. That is EXACTLY what the government would expect of the small businessman. Also, LO
