There was a column a few days ago in the Houston Chronicle that made a very compelling argument concerning the Texans and Head Coach Gary Kubiak. The crux of the opinion was based on a comparison with the early stages of Coach Kubiak’s career and that of Jeff Fisher of the now Tennessee Titans. It asked us to be patient, with Kubiak and brought up some interesting truths.

Very true facts:

14-20 in their first 34 games (now add another loss)

Some glaring missteps early in their career

           Some corrections since

Congratulations to the Houston Texans and Coach Gary Kubiak on their first win!!!

I will write more later, but this BCS mess is driving me crazy!

The BCS is a bad joke. Not, because the championship game is a bad joke. Rather, it is a joke because the polls are a joke.

We have been told for years that college football is the one sport in which every week is a playoff. Suffer one loss and you are done. Then, we were told that one late loss would end your chances of the vaunted National Championship. Okay, that sounds semi-logical in what passes for logic in college football. But wait; is this really how everything is determined? Ummm, NO!

First of all, there is hypocrisy in the polls. Every poll argument begins and ends with its own poll as the evidence. For example, a team is ranked high because they beat another highly ranked team. Okay, who said that ranking was valid? I offer the famous USC. Their “quality wins” are vs. Arizona State and Ohio State. Arizona State has two wins and four losses. They have beaten Stanford and Northern Arizona. Wow! That makes Arizona State a “quality win”? Ohio State is six and one, but they can’t score.

According to various sources, New York Rangers recent draft pick Alexei Cherepanov died during a game in his native Russia on Monday night.  An accidental collision during a line change may have been a factor, but speculation abounds. No matter the case, it is a sad tragedy for a very young man, a family, a franchise, and a promising career.

      4th and Goal

A few seconds left in the game

      Houston down

What does the offensive guru call?-A fade to the dominating Andre Johnson?-A run with rookie sensation Steve Slaton?-A pass over the middle to big Owen Daniels? No,a quarterback draw with slow footed Matt Schaub. GREAT CALL!

Miami, who had covered the Houston receivers like a the paparazzi at a Brittany Spears' Las Vegas weekend, made a crucial mistake. They placed their linebackers way too wide for a goal line defense. In football coaches vernacular, they were in an "unsound" defense. Understand, however, that even though the Dolphins had been all over the Texan catching corps, Johnson had made some amazing snags that were giving Miami coach Tony Sporano ulcers. So, Miami had little choice. Result-Houston Texan Quarterback Matt Schaub dropped back, showed pass, then ran straight up the middle-TOUCHDOWN!! Texans Win! Texans win!

It happened. It really happened. The Detroit Lions did something smart. The trade of Roy Williams has got to bring some hope to the historically horrific franchise-not because Roy can't play, but because the Lions have just turned one first round pick(Roy Williams) into several picks. Let's face it. The Lions need picks, but what they really need is players.

With the firing of Matt Millen, maybe these picks will turn into players. There are only three ways to turn a franchise around quickly-lots of good picks, great pick ups in free agency, and the hiring of a great coach.

If Detroit makes a smart move now with their General Manager position, these all could come true. The new Gm will have lots of picks, room under the salary cap, and the power to change coaches. Bill Cowher will be available. Don't forget, the Lions also play in a weak division.

Here we go! After poor performances in the first few weeks of the season, the Texans are righting the ship. The Texans were like Ashlee Simpson singing live, but now they are much more like a digitally remastered version of Sinatra.

In the first half of Sunday’s game with Detroit, Houston looked dominant. The running game has come alive and the passing game has become eerily familiar. Hmm Zone blocking scheme running for yards at will and a passing game that has the bootleg pass as a staple. The Texans have an offense that ranks in the top two in the AFC and a running game that is ranked in the top 5 in the conference. Sound like you have heard this description before? Yes, we are now “Denver South.”

This is, of course, exactly what the Texans leadership expected when they hired the former back-up quarterback and offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos-Mike Shanahan’s clone. Hey, if you can’t date the cheerleader, date her little sister. Now the question is-Do we have John Elway or Brian Griese?

While surfing the internet recently, I have come to a sad conclusion-the Apocalypse is UPON US! The number of morons in America is staggering. I wrote a column several weeks ago talkling about what would happen if a star quarterback like Tony Romo was injured during the season.   Although the comments I have recieved here have been insightful,I was lambasted by some on other message boards for claiming that he indeed was injured. I found it laughable that they could not understand that a question was being raised. (Article is found in September Archives) Romo wasn't hurt. We all knew that. Now he is -  as well as Tom Brady, Carson Palmer, and Brodie Croyle. My staments on its effects on a team have also come true. But I digress.
